The owner of this property saw to every hospitable detail down to the welcome card in the refrigerator! From the bathrobes in the closets, a kitchen stocked with cookware, knives, and dishes, to the ample seating overlooking the canyon - Dove's Rest delivered!
We came to the property to celebrate our daughter's well-earned master's degree from Texas Tech in Lubbock. After graduation, we made the 1.5 hour journey to the Fortress. The drive was relaxing, and the owner's directions made finding the "cabin" a breeze - even in the dark. As soon as we arrived, we were able to gaze at the starlit sky before settling in for the night. Upon entering the Fortress, we felt like we were being welcomed home. The beds were comfortable, the property smelled clean, and the place was ready for us to enjoy.
We awoke early to enjoy the majestic and breathtaking sunrise overlooking what I believe is called Sunday Canyon. My husband fixed a wonderful breakfast which we enjoyed while taking in the general splendor of the place. The property was so peaceful, it was hard to tear ourselves away to go visit Palo Duro - by mid-afternoon, we made the short and enjoyable trek to Palo Duro Canyon (a lovely 5-10 minute drive from the Fortress.) The state park has ample opportunities for hikers, bikers, photographers, and more. If you would like to hike some of the trails, budget 4-6 hours, wear appropriate clothing for rugged terrain, and take lots of water. And then head back to the Fortress to enjoy the hot tub while watching the sunset wash the sky in pink, coral, and violet hues. When we had to leave the property and come home, the question was - when can we go back?? I highly recommend this property or any property owned/managed by Jeff Means.
